David Anderson Mitchell was my grandfather and truly my inspiration. Grandpa instilled in me a deep love and appreciation for animals of every kind. He was an extraordinarily accomplished veterinarian. During his extensive career, he was the head veterinarian over Washington, Oregon, Alaska, and later on Florida. He was in charge of importation/exportation of animals in and out of these states, as well as control/elimination of cattle disease. Grandpa received many awards from the Secretary of Agriculture for his accomplishments and Federal Service. One of his two most notable accomplishments was his instrumental role in the elimination of Brucellosis in Florida. His other most notable accomplishment was achieved when he and his task force eliminated the threat of Newcastles Disease affecting chickens in California. The list of his accomplishments goes on and on, and I could brag about him forever. But what I remember most about my grandpa was his stories. He was the most brilliant story teller. He would talk to me for hours about all of the animals he owned over the years, about his life growing up, and about being a veterinarian. I remember calling him on the phone with any question about any animal and he always had an answer. I specifically remember one instance when I was little. After I caught a moth to keep as a pet, I ran to my mom to call Grandpa because he was the only one I trusted to tell me what moths eat. Grandpa always wanted me to become a vet, but I knew from an early age that that wasn't my journey. It was my Grandpa who taught me to love and care for animals passionately, and although how I show my care for animals may look a little different than veterinary medicine, I hope to carry on his legacy through RAM Pet Services.
